I was not comfortable with many of the plans on the net that were frameless. I just visualized them as being laterally &#8216;wobbly.&#8217; The frame design Scott came up with is industrial strength &#8211; I cannot overemphasize the quality of this design.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;\">I am not going to re-hash the details of <a href=\"http:\/\/home.austin.rr.com\/shumate\/unicade\/\">Scott&#8217;s Unicade<\/a> since his site is very thorough already, but I will point out those things that I chose to do differently. I have another page with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/default.htm\">photo timeline<\/a> if you want to see how the cabinet progressed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;\">You may notice some extra notches in my frame. I had originally planned on using them but the design evolved and they eventually went unused.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>1)<\/strong> I chose to have the frame rest <strong>on top<\/strong> of the 2&#215;6&#8217;s, connected with biscuits and screws. Scott&#8217;s design had the 2&#215;6&#8217;s notched to accept the &#8216;legs.&#8217; My logic in changing this is that those legs bear a lot of weight and I would rather that weight comes down onto solid pine, rather than less sturdy MDF that could give way if damp or aged.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1311.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8\" title=\"img_1311\" src=\"http:\/\/mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1311-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1311-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1311.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">2)<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> I used 3\/4&#8243; MDF for the bottom for additional strength.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">3) <\/span> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Rather than using angle iron to attach the monitor, on the bottom I used a 4&#215;4 cut at an angle. It is glued and screwed to the frame. This worked very well, and has a very sturdy feel. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Monitor Bottom: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9 size-medium\" title=\"img_1325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1325-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1325-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mamenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2008\/05\/img_1325.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">4)<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> I opted to use a wireless keyboard rather than a wired one in a drawer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">5)<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> I used laminate on the front door\/panel. I have three young kids that are going to be playing this thing and paint wouldn&#8217;t last a week. Plus, aesthetically I like it better than paint.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">6)<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> I used thinner &amp; lighter 1\/8&#8243; Masonite for the two back panels in order to reduce the weight. The frame is rigid enough that this doesn&#8217;t compromise the cabinet strength noticeably. The top angled panels are still MDF. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">7) <\/span> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Wherever Scott specified 5\/8&#8243; MDF I used 3\/4&#8243; simply because I could not find 5\/8&#8243; locally.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">8 )<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> I put vents on top and on the lower back reduce heat. I did this after reading<a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.mac.com\/asaxton\/mame\/hardware.htm\"> this site<\/a>. It makes the cab look more authentic also IMHO.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Arial,Helvetica;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> 9) <\/span> <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">I added light control measures (foil tape, masonite backboard) behind the marquee light so light would not leak out of the vents. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I used the cabinet plans found at Scott&#8217;s Unicade.
